Acute pancreatitis is a significant health problem in the United States with nearly 50 cases of acute pancreatitis/100,000 people per year. As pancreatitis may be a life threatening disease it is necessary to seek treatable aetiologies after the first pancreatitis attack. A thorough evaluation will identify an aetiology in 93% of patients and many of these aetiologies are treatable.
