  Axial Low Back Pain
 

Axial low back pain is a common complaint encountered by the General Practitioner. Estimates indicate that 80% of adults in the U.S. will experience low back pain at some point in their life. This lecture provides the physician with concepts associated with the diagnosis and treatment of axial low back and leg pain.

  ONLINE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES  
  Following completion of this seminar, the physician will have a working knowledge of concepts associated with the diagnosis and treatment of axial low back and leg pain.

The most common causes of axial back pain and the pathophysiology and natural history of symptomatic herniated nucleus pulposus and degenerative spinal stenosis will be addressed in this presentation.

This lecture will present pertinent spinal anatomy, relevant pathophysiology, classic clinical presentations and fundamentals of diagnosis. Both nonoperative management skills and basics of surgical treatment will also be addressed.

Alexander R. Vaccaro III, M.D. and
Matthew D. Eichenbaum, M.D.
Dr Vaccaro received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine where he earned membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society and graduated in 1987 cum laude. Dr. Vaccaro completed a year of surgical internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University in 1992. He did a Spine fellowship at the University of San Diego in California and became a member of the department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in 1993. Dr. Vaccaro is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, PA. He is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and specializes in the management and treatment of disorders of the spine. He is Co-Director of the Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center of the Delaware Valley, one of the largest tertiary referral centers for spinal cord injuries in the nation. Dr. Vaccaro holds numerous society memberships including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Society, the Philadelphia College of Surgeons, the Cervical Spine Research society, the North American Spine Society, the Scoliosis Research Society, the American Orthopaedic Association and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. In 2000, he was selected to be an AOA-Japanese Orthopaedic Traveling Fellow In the summer of 2003 he toured Europe as a Scoliosis Research Society traveling fellow. Dr. Vaccaro has done extensive research on numerous topics related to spinal disorders. He has published well over 250 peer-review and non-peer review articles. He has authored over 100 book chapters and edited 10 textbooks. He is also the Co-Director of the Spine Fellowship program at Thomas Jefferson University and is responsible for teaching residents and fellows the principles of spinal care.
Dr. Eichenbaum is a Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University and the Division of Spinal Surgery at The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, PA. He received his Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University where he earned honors in multiple surgical and orthopaedic clerkships. Dr. Eichenbaum will begin his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in June 2004. His clinical and research interests include general orthopaedics, spinal surgery and sports medicine.
