  Exploring Asthma
 

Asthma is a disease that affects individuals of all ages worldwide. This lecture provides a background of information and exposes the health care practitioner to current National Institute of Health treatment guidelines and new directions in treatment.

N.B. This program was originaly produced for US healthcare workers.

 
     
  ONLINE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES  
Upon completion of this online program, the participant should be able to:

To understand the pathophysiology of asthma;

>

To gain knowledge in the diagnostic work up of the asthma patient;

>

To appreciate important differential diagnoses in the patient with asthma and to highlight the potential importance of these diagnoses in the “non responding” asthmatic patient;

> To appreciate the environmental aspects of asthma management;
> To learn strategies in monitoring asthma and adjusting therapy to allow optimal control for patients
> To understand that asthma is an inflammatory disease, and that anti-inflammatory drug therapy is the foundation for asthma management;
> To gain exposure to the current NIH Guidelines for asthma management;
> To improve expertise in asthma pharmacology;
> To increase comfort level in managing acute asthma exacerbations;
> To highlight new directions in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of asthma.

AUTHOR
Peter Pace, M.D. is currently a staff pulmonary/critical care medicine physician at The Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the director of the medical intensive care unit and chairman of the hospital’s critical care committee. His training included internal medicine residency as well as pulmonary/critical care medicine fellowship at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. Dr. Pace is board certified in all three disciplines. He cares for numerous asthma patients as well as patients monary disease entities.
