The thrust of this lecture is to discuss the management of patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest through the use of implantable cardiac defibrillators. New technology for the treatment of congestive heart failure due to cardiomyopathy is also presented. Included are the features of ICDs and the basics of programming.

  ONLINE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES  
Upon completion of this online program, the participant should:
 
>

Recognise the prognosis of patients presenting with sudden cardiac arrest or sustained ventricular arrhythmias;

>

Develop an understanding of the indications for implantable cardioverter defibrillators in the treatment of patients who present with sustained arrhythmias;

>

Identify the population at risk for development of sustained ventricular arrhythmias post-infarction and recognise indications for implantable defibrillators for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death;

> Understand some simple features of ICDs (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators) and the basics of programming, as well as additional features available in the current devices which may assist with arrhythmia diagnosis and management;
> Describe the indications for implantation of bi-ventricular pacing systems, and recognize established indications for implantation of biventricular pacing systems with defibrillator back-up.

Dr. Frank E. Marchlinski is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. He is also the Director of Electrophysiology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dr. Marchlinski received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and served his medical residency and cardiology fellowships at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and electrophysiology. Dr. Marchlinski has lectured and written extensively on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
