  Stroke (CVA)
 

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the western world, behind heart disease and cancer, and an even more important cause of disability. This lecture outlines the risk factors for ischemic stroke, appropriate diagnostic tests, therapeutic options for ischemic stroke, both acute and chronic, and less common causes of stroke.

AUTHOR
Lawrence A. Kerson, M.D. is a practicing neurologist with a subspecialty in neurophthalmology. He is a 1964 graduate of Brown University (mathematics, magna cum laude) and a 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Kerson was a medical intern at Duke University Medical Center and completed his neurology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City . He was Assistant Chief of Medicine at the USPHS Hospital in Staten Island, New York from 1972 to 1974, when he also was on the clinical faculty of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. For 29 years he has been engaged in the private office and hospital practice of neurology and has been on the clinical faculty at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he is currently Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology. He is Director of Neurology at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
