Basic Life Support

This webinar will give nurses, carers and other health and social care staff the knowledge and skills to perform basic life support safely (adults and paediatrics). Courses include adaptations to CPR as recommended by the Resuscitation Council (UK) for COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Target Audience: This course is suitable for nurses, healthcare assistants, carers, pharmacists and other healthcare staff.

Learning outcomes include:
  • Understand basic life support requirements in adults and paediatrics.
  • Understand the principles that underpin basic life support in adults and paediatrics.
  • Know the circumstances under which resuscitation is performed.
  • Know the importance of early intervention.
  • Be aware of the different types of cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Be aware of how to manage a choking patient in line with current national guidelines.
  • Be aware of the steps to take in order to place a patient in the recovery position.
  • Know the role of an automated external defibrillation
  • Know how to operate of an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely
Course content includes:
  • Role of a First Aider.
  • How to maintain a safe environment.
  • Perform primary /secondary survey.
  • Summoning help.
  • Demonstrate actions for choking emergencies (trainer only for webinars).
  • Place someone in the recovery position.
  • Effectively demonstrate Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in adults and paediatrics (trainer only for webinars).
  • The role of an automated external defibrillation
  • The safe operation of an automated external defibrillator
  • Demonstrate actions for choking emergencies (trainer only for webinars).
Trainer Bio

Alastair Robertson is an experienced health and social care training professional.

With 18 years’ experience as a qualified adult educator, he has worked with Charles Bloe Training for over 4 years. As well as the health and social care sectors, Alastair has also worked in prison and criminal justice settings and has experience of working in community mental health and statutory social work sectors. Alastair has written one of the first stress management debrief training programmes and has facilitated it across international settings.

His academic achievements include a Masters degree in psychology and mental health and multiple qualifications in management, training practice and social care certifications. During his leisure time, Alastair likes to spend time travelling in his motor home with his family and two adorable dogs.


Moving and Handling

This webinar provides you with an update of safe and effective practice for moving and handling people. Your trainer will demonstrate the principles of safe moving and handling as well as a number of specifc tasks, e.g. hoisting and use of slide sheets.
All content has been verified by Skills for Health as aligning to the UK Core Skills Training Framework.

Target audience: This course is a refresher programme suitable for nurses, carers, healthcare assistants, support workers and other healthcare staff whose role involves moving and handling of people. Please note: this is not suitable for anyone who has not received previous training in moving and handling of people.

  • Demonstrate a proficient skills level of a key selection of moving and handling techniques relating to your own work setting including: the safe use of mechanical patient hoists and related sling application; the safe use of slide sheets and the sit to stand transfer (trainer only for webinars)

  • The principles of safe moving and handling of people.
  • Legislation relating to moving and handling – Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) 1992.
  • Current guidance on safe practice.
  • ‘Bad practices’.
  • Spinal mechanics and back care.
  • Risk assessment.
  • Safe load management.
  • Applying principles to lifting, lowering, pulling & pushing, carrying and supporting.
