This half day course can be run on its own or as part of a 1 or 2 day acquired brain injury course or learning disability course.

The overall aim of this course is to introduce (and or refresh) the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to maintain the safety of and assist to ensure the patient / client reaches their full potential. There will be a clear emphasis on safety of the patient/ client and communication tools and techniques. The course will take account of professional, legal and ethical guidelines, policies and procedures and best practice guidance.

The course will include experiential learning to empathize with the experience of living with autism and discussion to learn from each other’s experience. Learners will develop a clear vision about their role in caring for people with autism and an awareness of the different support agencies.

This course is suitable for all health and social care workers and is classed as mandatory for staff working in a care setting.

  • Discuss the neurobiological disorder that leads to Autism
  • To explore common behaviours observed in Autism and their impact on the autistic person
  • Identify and discuss the triad of impairment and how this influences care and support
  • Explore the impact of lack of social communication, interaction and imagination on a patient / client and their family / significant others.
  • Explain sensory, vestibular and tactile hypo / hypersensitivity
  • Explore different tools and techniques to assist and support the patient / client to reach their full potential and remain safe.
